FREE FESTIVAL FUN AWAITS THIS WEEK
In the spirit of celebrating the wonders of science, loads of free events will be on offer for students, science fans and families at the World Science Festival Brisbane 2017 this week.
For these free events, there’s no need to book. Just turn up and discover the variety of fun and informative events around the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre! Plenty of people are expected to come along though, so take not of the events that may attract a queue.
THE HATCHERY: Showcasing and Supporting Turtle Conservation
The hugely popular hit of 2016 returns with more space, more time, more eggs, more activities, more turtle and… jellyfish! Under the watchful eye of Reptile Curator Patrick Couper, visitors will experience nature’s most valuable gift as Loggerhead Turtle hatchlings break free from their shells and take their first breath of air.
Please be patient as we are expecting lengthy queues. This event will be complemented by a free craft activity close by the queuing area.
THE ART LAB: Science in the Studio
Visit Curios? – an exhibition featuring local artists inspired by science and the beauty and wonder of Queensland Museum’s Collection. You can get hands-on at our What is Science? drawing station, tailored for the little art masters among us.
AUSTRALIA ZOO WILDLIFE WARRIORS: Learn How You Can Help Conserve Our Planet
The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is the primary project for Wildlife Warriors, which to date has treated over 70,000 wildlife patients and works 24/7 to rescue and rehabilitate all native animals in need. Check out the techniques used in the largest crocodile study in the world and find out how you can contribute.
COLOUR OUR CORAL: A Mass Colouring Event
Join in one of the biggest public colouring-in projects on record. Get involved in the therapeutic science of colouring-in and make your mark on our giant coral reef. Put the colour back in coral at World Science Festival Brisbane.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Behind the scenes of the Queensland Museum is an extraordinary place where scientists, researchers, preparators and collection managers build and maintain one of Australia’s largest collections of natural and cultural heritage. These displays will some of the very best of the Museum’s collection and show how they are prepared, preserved, registered and displayed.
YOUNG ENGINEERS BRISBANE : Build Your Tomorrow, Today!
This is an interactive display introducing the basic principles of mathematics, science and engineering to children, using motorized LEGO® bricks and other methods that produce motion. Discover the many alternative sources of energy and race a ready-made vehicle to the finish line!

CODE A ROBOT: Coding, Robotics and Electronics
Building Block Studio presents the very best in robot coding experiences. Try your luck in the LIVE LEGO robotics challenge and participate in free coding activities for the whole family. Make them move, react and respond to your coding commands – serious science fun!
