Opening with a towering alien monolith that surrounds a group of distant primate relations, the gripping score for 2001: A Space Odyssey immediately captures the audience.

Imagine, for one moment, if you could experience the grandeur of Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra performed live by a symphony orchestra in a concert hall along with Stanley Kubrick’s signature direction.

This is what will be on offer for those attending the World Science Festival Brisbane 2017.

The live show is a proud presentation of the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Performing Arts Centre in association with Warner Bros., Southbank Centre London and the British Film Institute.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra will perform for the entire film, which has been digitally remastered, along with the Australian Voices choir, led by internationally renowned conductor Marc Taddei.

No matter how many times you’ve seen this Kubrick classic, iconic moments, such as the zero gravity docking at the space station with Johann Strauss II’s Blue Danube Waltz, are more visceral with the auditory wonder of a symphony orchestra.

The film, which was co-written by prolific science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke, is a beautiful blend of science and art and deals with a range of themes such as existentialism, human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial life. Many of these subjects are explored throughout the World Science Festival Brisbane 2017 program.

As well as opening the festival on Wednesday 22 March there will be two additional performances on Thursday 23 March, including a matinee.

Science and film buffs could not have the chance to witness this Queensland premiere without the generous support of our partners including Tourism and Events Queensland, Brisbane Marketing, Griffith University, QUT, The University of Queensland and the BHP Billiton Foundation, the Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation, Channel 7, ABC Brisbane and Radio National.
