Andrew Thornhill

Dr Andrew Thornhill is a botanical lecturer at the University of New England (UNE) in Armidale, NSW and director of UNE’s N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium. In the early 2000s Andrew completed a PhD at ANU on Myrtaceae pollen. Drawing on herbarium collections and comparative microscopy, he investigated how pollen form varied across lineages and what those patterns revealed about relationships, evolution, and diversification. Andrew translates detailed pollen evidence into clear stories using 3D printed models of pollen that are enlarged 1000 times their actual size. Each shape gives a hint as to how the plant is pollinated and how old they may be.
