Scientific Name: Skartopus australis (Southern Nimble Foot)
Age: Jurassic to Cretaceous Period (180-93 million years ago)
Size: Footprints 5-15 cm long
Location: Mt. Morgan and Winton, Central Queensland
Skartopus is the name given to small footprints that are three-toed with sharp claws. The footprints were most likely made by chicken-sized meat-eating theropods, such as the coelurosaurs. Queensland Museum palaeontologist, Dr. Scott Hocknull and colleagues, are using 3D scanning technology to see inside the layers of rock preserving the footprints. Fossil footprints of Skartopus can be seen on display in the Lost Creatures exhibit at Queensland Museum, South Bank.
