World Science Festival Brisbane’s hugely popular annual turtle hatching offers a rare opportunity for students to witness nature at its finest, while learning about Queensland Government conservation initiatives that have been crucial to the survival of an endangered species. Students will witness Loggerhead Turtles emerging from their eggs in transparent incubators and see them swimming in our large saltwater aquariums.
This initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Environment and Science and Queensland Museum. It is overseen by Dr Colin Limpus, an internationally recognised turtle expert, and Patrick Couper, the museum’s Reptile Curator.
After the festival, the turtle hatchlings will be transported to the Sunshine Coast and released 20 kilometres offshore, directly into the Eastern Australia Current.
This program explores Ethical Understandings, Science as a Human Endeavour and Science Inquiry for Years P-10, and program supports Science strands years P-10.
Suitable for students in Years P – 12.
