Entries open for the 2022 Queensland Women in STEM Prize
World Science Festival Brisbane is proud to showcase our extraordinary Queensland women working in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) fields to make a difference to the wellbeing of individuals and communities across Queensland, nationally and globally.
This year, World Science Festival Brisbane will feature two previous Queensland Women in STEM Prize award recipients.
Fiona Holmstrom, co-founder and director of STEM Punks, is passionate about ensuring equality in education for girls in STEM. Fiona’s mission is to make STEM Education more accessible to girls to prepare them for a future where they can make a difference to humanity and solve problems. STEM Punks achieves this through their online learning platform, school holiday classes, term classes, incursions, Teacher Professional Development program, STEM store, Magazine, and YouTube channel. World Science Festival Brisbane and STEM Punks are turning innovation into sport, thought the STEM Innovation Sports program. Eight schools will complete in a Design Thinking and Minecraft speed build challenge to crown the fastest and best designers. Who will win the championship belt?
Dr Samantha Nixon used her fear of spiders to help cure disease. A venom scientist (and spider advocate) at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at The University of Queensland, Dr Nixon’s research harnesses the chemistries in venom to develop new medicine. Dr Nixon is a passionate advocate for addressing inequality in STEM, education and leadership through science communication, and hopes sharing her passion for spiders will help inspire the next-generation of Australian scientists. You’ll hear from Dr Nixon as part of this year’s World Science Festival Brisbane Cool Jobs series available from 9 March, where STEM experts will share their amazing journey to their dream job.
