World Science Festival Brisbane’s hugely popular annual turtle hatching offers a rare opportunity for visitors to witness nature at its finest, while learning about a real-world conservation initiative that has been crucial to the survival of Australia’s precious Loggerhead turtles.

After the festival, the newborn turtles are transported to the Sunshine Coast, where they are released 20 kilometers offshore. This is a significant milestone in the conservation efforts to protect these animals, which are listed as endangered species in Australia.

Watch as the hatchlings from this year’s festival are introduced the Eastern Australian Current. The hatchlings will ride this current, taking them past the northern tip of New Zealand and on to the coasts of Chile and Peru.
