Michael’s research focuses on an often-overlooked element of environmental restoration—the inclusion of animals and their behaviour in restoration planning, implementation and monitoring of coastal ecosystems.
His ground-breaking research in this area earned him a prestigious Young Tall Poppy Science Award in 2022. Michael also conducts related research on the ecology of seagrasses, mangroves and saltmarshes.
He’s also studied salmon and bivalve aquaculture, and how urban stormwater wetlands function as habitat for native animals.
Michael is an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) fellow with the Global Wetlands Projects at Griffith University’s Australian Rivers Institute.
