Michelle is a river ecologist and visual artist, a descendent of Bidjara from the Warrego area, Dunghutti, central coast NSW, and multi-generational settler farmers. Michelle’s area of research includes ecology of inland and tropical rivers and Indigenous ecological knowledges. She has recently been focusing on freshwater mussels, the natural filtration system of our waterways. Michelle’s arts practice draws on both Indigenous and scientific observations of water processes and plant-animal-human-place interactions, using Indigenous philosophies of interconnectedness and deep listening to understand our role as humans as part of nature. She is currently a PhD candidate and Associate Lecturer with Australian Rivers Institute at Griffith University. She lives on Turrbal country in Meanjin, Brisbane, with her three sons, two indoor cats and two catfish.
