David Ryugo uses anatomical and neurophysiological methods to study the brain and how we hear. He is a graduate of Yale University, spent 9 years on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, and 23 years at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before moving to Sydney to join the Garvan Institute and UNSW as a Conjoint Professor. He seeks to understand brain mechanisms of hearing in mammals and examines structure-function relationships in auditory neuronal circuits. David is especially interested in how deafness and hearing loss alter brain organisation to explore strategies for hearing restoration.
