The Science of Awe

The Science of Awe

UPDATE 29 March 2025: Unfortunately, Dr. Julia Baird is unwell and will not be able to present The Science of Awe. In her place, Australian political journalist, commentator and television host Annabel Crabb will be leading the conversation.

Delve into the sustaining power of awe with Annabel Crabb as she interviews a panel of experts as they share their extraordinary stories that pushed them to the edges of belief.

Featuring:

  • Dr Lee Kannis-Dymand, who is inspired by his love of the ocean and nature, has focused his research on awe. Dr Kannis-Dymand proposed a psychological model of awe that is informed by the research to date and contributes to our understanding of awe’s various characteristics.
  • NASA Astronaut Christina Koch, who speaks of the “awe effect” from first-hand experience, having spent 328 days in space.
  • Dr Clarissa Whitmire from the Queensland Brain Institute, a leading expert in neuroengineering where the scientific focus of her research group is largely driven by a single concept: Perception is a construct.

Delve into the sustaining power of awe as part of World Science Festival Brisbane.
